Local hardware store here has a length measuring device they use to measure out rope etc. The rope passes through an opening, and spins a wheel that spins a counter. It looks somewhat similar to this http://www.cactusnav.com/images/ZPLAP427352.jpg
The one our shop has here is probably from the 1950's though and has 3 counting wheels, one for ft, inches and yards. It looks pretty badass imho.
