The start of experiences like this always really surprise me. If someone came and gave me strange warnings about a place, warnings that seem like something far more than the usual is going on, I would simply leave that place. I would not assume the person is joking to try to mess with me. I really would just leave. There is no place that I want to visit so badly that I would disregard clear red flags like that.
