You could potentially do it with lasers and partials in the air but there are many variables to that.

Practical uses would be University biolabs with a touch overlay, executive conference rooms, manufacturing facilities for this gs like visualizing a product before preproduction ect.

I'm most excited for AR. To me, VR is going to land itself in the gaming world mostly exclusively. Or more fun things. Whereas AR is going to be amazing for productivity, both personal and business.

As much as I love 3d printing tech I can't wait for it to be so much faster and can only imagine my kids laughing at current printers and considering them the same way we currently look at something like an atari.

As with any tech, it would improve over time. I think a 3d display without glasses is a better description then hologram, depending on the exact tech used inside.

However, per current tech and our knowledge of physics. Our perception of what a "hologram" should be is not possible. Not without a "container" of sorts. A true Star Wars style hologram is just not obtainable as it defies physics in the way of somehow stopping light at precise distances without physical interruptions.
