Normally yes, they’re closing mon/tue for spring hours. Not sure if that started this week or not. Give them a call to check.

The guys at the bike shop in Leb used to run a regular Sunday ride in the summer. Not sure what the current status of that group is, but there’s a whole bunch of regular rides in the area, and it’s really easy to find smaller groups, since basically everyone here rides.

No, it’s not that bad. Yes you should have snow tires, and yes you’ll drive below the speed limit at times. But if you do that, it’s fine. It’s a highway and well-plowed and tens of thousands of people commute on it everyday.

Yeah, that sounds totally feasible, so long as you’re patient and ready to go once something comes available, and either not too picky or willing to buy something that’s almost what you want and then make some small changes.

It’ll probably get somewhat better after March, but it’s pretty much always slimmer pickings on the VT side, and it’s been pretty limited everywhere for a couple years now.

Ehhhh. We built an ADU for my parents during that time, and while we definitely paid a bunch extra for framing, and everyone fixated on that, framing is a very small portion of the cost of an actual house, so it doesn’t move the needle that much at the end of the day.

Reply to Growing Zones? by JMChaseArt
Well, if you want to grow potatoes, asparagus, and turnips, you will surely not be disappointed, as they all grow just fine without issues.
For more sensitive stuff, historically zone 4 was more accurate, but the last decade has at least been on the edge of 5, with a small asterisk depending on elevation. Median last frost was around June 1, but I don’t think that it’s come after May 15 for at least ten years, and the season goes much further into the fall than it used to.

The weather is alarming, but not because it's cold, which is what gets all the attention. The cold snap was normal; it's the rest of the winter that people should be alarmed by. I'm not trying to "obfuscate" anything. Asking for precision is not denying climate science.

The comment I was responding to says, verbatim, “both unseasonably warm and frigid”. It is not. These are not unseasonably frigid temperatures. They are unseasonably warm. The swings are probably more abrupt than they used to be, but that’s not what I was objecting to.

Even just a few years ago (around Christmas 2017) it was subzero for most of a week, with lows around -20. Totally normal thing, happened every year when I was a kid. I only remember 2017 because my in-laws had just moved up here from PA and were like “WTF have we done?!!!”

The cold snap wasn’t even really that unusual though (or if it was, it was only for the high winds). We have several days with temps like that in a normal winter, we’ve just all gone soft.

Why would I tell my realtor anything? If it wasn’t worth $480 to me, I wouldn’t have bought it. Who cares what Zillow thinks?

Reply to comment by SnareWire in What should I expect at a zoning variance meeting? by SnareWire
Note that if you do want to speak against it, "I don't like it because X" is not very useful to the zoning board. The board has a specific set of criteria by which variances are supposed to be evaluated. You want to be able to say "I believe that this variance should not be granted because it does not address requirement Y in the town zoning ordinance, and the same goals could be achieved without a variance and without significant hardship by doing Z."
Excellent_Affect4658 t1_j7bwjrw wrote
Ask your neighbor to walk you through what they’re planning to do. If it’s something you’re cool with, ignore it or show up to speak in favor. If it’s something you’re not cool with, tell them your concerns rather than blindsiding them at the meeting. If they’re not receptive to addressing your concerns and you want to speak against it at the meeting, read the minutes from past meetings (they should be online) so you know what to expect.

And the landlord is required to provide them! So again, either the apartment is inadequate to state standards, or OP has not been shown how to keep it heated. Either way, the answer does not have to be “just suck it up and have a 55 degree apartment.”

Reply to comment by CosmicSurfFarmer in Is it normal for the heat to not be able to keep up with extreme cold? by SquashDue502
This is not normal. Don’t apologize for landlords. They are required to provide a system capable of maintaining 65 degrees. If the system can’t keep up and drops 10 degrees below that in a single day of cold weather (weather that we regularly have for a few days or a week most winters), then one or more of the following apply:
- the rental unit has inadequate insulation and sealing
- the heating system is undersized
- the heating system needs service
- OP has not been shown how to use the system correctly
Excellent_Affect4658 t1_j76jh97 wrote
Dropping to 56 overnight is pretty extreme. What kind of a place is this, how is it heated, etc?
