I would roll my eyes at that complaint within that context. I don’t necessarily roll my eyes at the use of the word “woke” alone.

It’s similar to how I roll my eyes at the article posted because I think it massively misses the mark. But that isn’t because they used the word “misogynoir” itself.

Yes! I thought this too and didn’t even get to it. The “controversial” jokes in Friends were not about laughing at bigots, that’s a weird attempt at a historical rewrite. And I don’t really have an issue with Friends at all myself, it’s just dated.

Bring back our lovable bigots!

But in all seriousness, that quote stood out as frustrating because she is literally describing what people want out of comedy now. People who talk about how “punching down” is bad would LOVE more jokes making fun of bigots. So it’s like she heard the complaints but didn’t really hear what people are saying and instead twisted it into making her and other comedians into victims. It makes her look incredibly out-of-touch which would track with her wealth and decades of success.

I opened the whole article hoping I could defend her and that maybe she was just making a point about the cultural climate but not necessarily complaining about it. But many of her quotes are very explicitly complaining about it.

This one stood out also:

“[In the past] you could joke about a bigot and have a laugh — that was hysterical. And it was about educating people on how ridiculous people were. And now we’re not allowed to do that.”

You are definitely allowed to do this and there are jokes like this all the time. What is she on about?

So let me guess: in the face of a looming admissions crisis that has been predictable for many many years due to widely reported population decline, no one wants to innovate education and create more affordable tuition structures. Instead, let’s punish the few Gen Z who will be going to school with a higher rate.

Love Philly Goat Project! Apparently, you can actually hire them to bring some goats to a party or event for a personal petting zoo. And the handlers will share goat education. My work did this once for a party for us and it was the best thing ever!

Right? I seriously love taking trains. I’m willing to pay a bit of a markup over other options to support rail service and because it’s fun. But it’s essentially never worth it when I do the math for the times I want to travel, the difference is way too extreme.

Good point, I often forget that since I never really buy for more than two and if I’m going with a group, it’s friends who take care of themselves financially.

My main priority is not driving personally and zoning out or falling asleep so if I’m in a group of 3 or more where someone else wanted to drive, that would not be a bad option.

I don’t know about the routes down around Baltimore but I don’t see any reason to drive Philly to NYC even if Amtrak doesn’t make sense. There are so many cheap buses daily I couldn’t even count. And the Septa to NJT connection. The tolls over the bridges or through the tunnel alone are about as much as a one-way bus ticket. Then you’ve got gas and parking.

I actually choose Megabus over the Septa/NJT connection because it’s more comfortable and I can just fall asleep and not have to change trains.

I was looking to be in NYC before 3 pm on a Saturday and leave around 11am to 2 pm on the following Monday and there was nothing reasonable. Maybe a Saturday-Monday is harder to find than Friday to Sunday?

It’s definitely worth looking to see if you can get a deal, especially if you’re very flexible, but I find them kind of frustrating if you’re on any sort of schedule. The pricing structure is totally ridiculous to me. Most other countries would have either set or a much smaller window of movement in price for a 90 minute to 2 hour train ride but here it can be between $19 and like $150. Bonkers.

I planned a trip to NYC recently and kept checking Amtrak regularly from about 5 weeks before the trip. Never saw anything below $70 one way. Finally just said fuck it and bought Megabus about a week out for $30 roundtrip.

I think I got a $20 one way Philly to NYC fare once. I’m not sure if I’m doing something wrong but it doesn’t seem that easy to me at all.

Amtrak fares are a complete joke, in general, too.

There are plenty of logical reasons to have a car but not always an excuse for using it for every single thing you do living in dense a city. “Try septa” is not a ridiculous response to someone who just wants to have a meal in Fishtown coming from West Philly and didn’t indicate any mobility issues.
