Michael Keaton as Batman is a great example of this, I think. While many people think he's synonymous with the character now, when he was initially cast this was definitely not the case. Keaton was short, not at all intimidating, and known for comedy. It's safe to say he definitely did not suck, even if the writing of the character isn't as comic-accurate as it could have been.
