Pittsburgh seems to do better with specific genres and with large, multi-stage summer festivals supporting local artists than with curating nightly or weekend shows on a consistent basis.

From a festival perspective, the Deutschtown Music Festival and Millvale Music Festival both do an excellent job of bringing a wide range of local artists from around the region. All genres, all tastes. Family-oriented during the day, a bit rowdier at night.

I think the best evaluation of the local scene is that the smaller venues bring in regional or even national touring acts to fill out their schedules and/or bring in more revenue.

People with road rage or an inherent inability to drive are much more of a risk to me than simply being in Shadyside, Homewood, Bloomfield, Wilkinsburg, Squirrel Hill, or anywhere else.

I have never once felt unsafe in any of the lower income neighborhoods in the Pittsburgh area.

The reality is that there is obviously a problem with SOME of the teens who are congregating in this area after school, and that it will take collective effort on behalf of Pittsburgh Public, PRT and the community to solve it.

But there are also a lot of people in this thread painting with some really broad brushes. According to the state, 41.6% percent of Allderdice students are economically disadvantaged. That means 58.4% percent are not. There is no way of anyone in this thread to know for sure what the socioeconomic demographics are of those who are causing problems. Everyone else is making a classist assumption.

I hate when this information is shared without context.

The reason homes are affordable in Pittsburgh is because the housing stock is woefully out of date.

Almost any house you buy at $150,000 or lower needs substantial work, especially with heating and cooling. Central air is the standard these days, yet there are countless properties still using radiator or electric heat. Not to mention any needs for plumbing upgrades or new wiring.

As a full-time with benefits career? Not really. Most major news outlets have a select few photographers on staff as full-time employees and then hire freelancers to fill out the rest of the coverage they need.

Small papers in the suburbs and in rural areas don't have any full-time photographers and use only freelancers.
