This is a part of a marketing hype that was convinced that Gen X was going to be a hippy rebirth. There were other movies and tv shows at this time like Rude Awakening with Eric Roberts.

Kids from communes did start coming out to the real world at this time. They always had weed, so they were welcomed for that, but some were messed up and resembled stereotypical hillbillies.

This food was staving off starvation and propping up Ukraine's economy. They were given time to ship grain out and with delays that Russian attacks have made they were only at 1/3 shipped in the short window it was allowed.

I agree, such a tonal shift. In the 70's there had to be a twist ending of some sort for every horror movie but by the late 80's they just needed a repeated slasher with just the minimum of plot to move through the body count.
