Reply to comment by bolanrox in TIL that the phrase "It was a dark and stormy night" was the opening line to an actual novel published in 1830, but runs on for another 51 words: "It was a dark and stormy night; the rain fell in torrents — except at occasional intervals, when it was checked by a violent gust of wind which..." by dylancatlow

Very much his grandfather's fault - unless somebody forced him to aim a machine gun at people.

Reply to ELI5: Why do computers need GPUs (integrated or external)? What information is the CPU sending to the GPU that it can't just send to a display? by WeirdGamerAidan
Screens have millions of pixels and need to be updated at least 50 times per second. It is possible to connect a CPU directly to an HDMI cable (I have done that) but that doesn't really leave much time for the CPU to do any other work.
For that reason computers have had dedicated graphics chips for a very long time. In the early days those were fairly simple chips that just shared memory with the CPU. The CPU would put instructions like "blue 8x8 pixel square goes here", "Pac-Man goes there" into memory and then the graphics chip would send the right amount of electricity to the monitor at the right time.
These graphics chips have become more and more advanced and about 25-ish years ago were rebranded as GPUs. Nowadays they are quite generic and can run complicated calculations at phenomenal speeds.

I remember autostereoscopic TVs being demo'ed at a consumer show back in 1996. Nintendo was the first to put it in a handheld gaming device. Asus apparently the first to put it in an OLED laptop.

East German Plattenbau -style comes to mind.
Remove the dividing lines and you get a West German 1970s style.

Reply to William Gibson's latest book Agency - weirdly worse than his others?? by Obscura_Games
Peripheral was terrible, but I stuck with it because Agency was supposedly better and needed the background info. Now that I have read the first quarter of Agency I feel like I have wasted enough time.
