It works the same way American factories overseas does: they abide to local laws, but other than that they set their own rules and extract their profits for the owners.
Foxconn has no choice but to enforce a zero-Covid policy, but they had plenty of choices to not treat their workers in a shitty way, and they had plenty of choice to not house every employee on campus and restrict their movements.
Don’t know why people think everything works differently when it comes to China.

I think how the Cold War ended really made a lot of people forget how powerful the USSR once was. For a while, it was the world power with the most advanced technologies, with many renowned artists, and with an ideology that seemed to be the future for many people in the world. While the West ultimately emerged victorious in the Cold War, the USSR fought it at an equal footing — something the Russian Federation was never able to do.
