Drug problems, higher comparative crime to the rest of the state(still low overall though), lack of housing, lack of services in VT which drives down on their luck people to the cities here in the first place... take your pick. It's hard to live here compared to the midwest.

Marquette is much smaller and FEELS like a small town. Burlington isn't much of a city but it feels a lot bigger than it actually is, mostly due to the problems it's facing. It's been a couple years since I've been to Marquette but I'd pick that over Burlington any day if I were you. I took a quick peek at housing costs and while Marquette is still higher than average due to the college, it looks way cheaper than Burlington still.
I wanted to escape the Midwest but if I were going to move back it'd be to the UP somewhere or maybe Milwaukee.

To be fair, "just shovel it yourself" is an idea.

That's interesting; I rent on a private dirt road and some of my neighbors have also said that the mud is already worse than its ever been.

There's a camp in Pawlet that I guess is of concern. I think it's going to be hard to draw the line between some guys target shooting together and some guys training themselves militarily, though.

The court part might only take a day but there will be hours and hours of commitment before you ever get there.

Check out Bravecto, it's a 90 day chewable that's rx only. It doesn't stop ticks from getting on your dog but it kills them if they bite.

For sure. I've noticed that a few local/regional products (Cabot in particular) are also either the same or almost the same price as other national brands now.

This is a great answer. You could cheaply get a few signs up that state the "rules" for using your land as well; especially the dogs off leash thing would drive me crazy.

The Black Hills NF is a great example of forest mismanagement. Logging and maintenance has been at a standstill and the forest has been ravaged by pine beetles for the last decade and change due to forest overcrowding. The reality is that forests have never just grown unchecked, if we don't let sections burn then we must maintain them.

Piggybacking on the other commentor but you could also offer really good employee benefits... if it's a food store you could give a staff meal each shift or a nice discount on whatever you sell. That means a lot when there's not many places to shop.
