Expert here. That's completely normal and not out of the ordinary. They just report it now. You can compare the numbers easily: https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/search/
Also, the most commonly used scale (Richter) is logarithmic. There's a huge difference between magnitude 3 and magnitude 6.

Then I misunderstood the question. I thought OP was just asking about the area directly around the trench.

Veeery short answer:
Denser means more weight per volume, so the "heavier" oceanic plate sinks below the "lighter" continental one.
Similar to the density contrast in oil and water. Oil is less dense so it floats on water.
