The cause is known. It's chemical runoff from modern agriculture (most because of livestock feed).

Oh, I can definitely see that in a decent town. Unfortunately most places I've lived the local pizza places were garbo. Definitely take a good deli, but they're much less populous than Subways. Some places are just terrible for food and Subways are literally everywhere in multiple instances.

Compared to? They're the only fast food chain with more than two vegetables on a sandwich worth eating, and it goes from 2 to like 10.
Edit: Major fast food chain, that you consistently get everywhere.

The ocean dead zones have a critical impact on the ocean ecosystem, and the oceans are the "lungs" of the planet. It is very much a climate issue.
Besides that, animal agriculture is one of the two leading causes of GHG emissions, and the leading cause of deforestation.
