The US did it just to show they could before Russia - Other countries have never had a good incentive to undertake such an expensive and pointless project.

I have no doubt we will be able to do it, but frankly I don't see the point. It will never be more than a science project, and a very dangerous and expensive one at that.

Just a note to all those saying 'nothing affects the speed of light' - Yes, light always travels at c in a vacuum. Light traveling in a denser medium like water or glass is considerably slowed down.

These are questions that we will probably never be able to answer - we are an infinitesimal speck of dust in the vast universe. Why that should make you reason your existence doesn't really follow. As for 'Are we real'? I'm not even sure what that means. If you are not real then where did this question come from?

Carl Sagan did an amazing series called Cosmos all about space, and it is available in book form too.
