There's actually new buildings made to look like old fashion NYC buildings. Everything can be designed to look a certain way. No reason for an old crumbling building to get that classic look when you can get a new construction with the classic look.

Same thing happened to me 20 years ago. (Damn I feel old saying that.) At the time I was wearing a bulky Casio G Shock watch and couldn't get my arm out the door. Same thing, I ran along the bus for one block banging on the door until he noticed me. I was a teen and in shape back then so no injuries, but could have been bad.

Pretty certain those vaults cannot be used as habitable rooms since it lacks the minimum natural light requirement. Also seems too deep to be considered a habitable room.
