He had the choice of a living wage with healthcare and stable housing? You sure about that?

Because median household income in Newark is $41k, or about $20 an hour. Median per capita income is $22k. Most people are making minimum wage ($14/hour) and you know that doesn't include health coverage. And half of people make less than that.

So yeah, I can completely understand why and how people get into situations where they make bad decisions. When the choice is being evicted, starving, dying without insulin, and robbing someone, I see why that last choice can seem like the only option.

But hey, YOU are doing great in life, so fuck him I guess.

Mistimed lights make it worse because drivers run red lights more often and block intersections. If you've ever driven in the city the lights are timed on the avenues to keep you going 30mph. Going faster means you run into a red light so there is no reason to go faster. If there isn't a ton of volume you can easily ride green lights for 20-30 blocks if not more.

> The lady who is upset is a planning lawyer who makes her living working for the township of Wayne. Probably owns property nearby and is upset that she won’t be able to find parking as easily. Talk about fair and balanced perspectives in reporting.

She does but she doesn't care about parking. I don't think she offers many good solutions, but there are very legitimate arguments that the city gives in too much to developers. For example 55 Union is not contributing anything to improve infrastructure in the direct neighborhood (which floods easily). They were granted variances on setbacks and their building goes practically right up to the street. They have a tax abatement so will not be contributing to the schools their kids will be going to.

And say what you will but she attends city meetings and makes her voice heard. Do you?

If you have small children they will enjoy it most likely. Everyone drives at like 2mph so they can be unbuckled and jump around the car looking at things.

Maybe I am cynical but if you are an adult only group make sure you bring a good attitude and are ready to act silly because it's not exactly the most impressive thing in the world..

It would have to get more local there as there is obviously a lot of non-residential/industrial land in the ironbound that will bring the measure down.

Downtown Newark doesn't have that excuse though, it's just parking lots.

If the owners of that 7-11 consistently bothered the Newark PD to handle it, they likely would. They didn't want to.

Bottom line is that is a shitty spot for a 7-11. Would be better for a third wave coffee shop that actually cares about quality food.

The waterfront is cutoff by highways (21) or major roads (raymond) with heavy truck traffic. I don't see this city becoming pedestrian friendly in my lifetime.

Shaq 2 was built practically right up to the road with no setback. Don't get me wrong, I'm thrilled it's happening, but Newark and NJ in general prioritizes car traffic over everything else.

Either way, we are very far from the required density for the city to feel alive.
