Quite worse indeed. But that doesn't mean things are acceptable now. DC now being better than things were during the days of the crack epidemic, street turf shootouts, Marion Barry driving the city to insolvency, etc. is like finding out you have the flu instead of long COVID--it could be worse but it still sucks.

It was worse. Early 90s were bad too. Doesn’t mean we have to accept what is now.

This is the third rail, because the “catch and release” model hasn’t exactly worked, but consigning a child to incarceration is a last resort. Of course, “last resort” doesn’t mean it’s never an appropriate consequence.

I haven't been watching the hearing, but I suspect this is right. Still, the failures of the US Attorney's office need greater exposure. And while I know this isn't always a popular opinion, but we also need more focus on the misguided public safety agenda of the DC Council.
