The way things are falling apart for Rootin' Tootin' Pootin, who needs "talks"? The Japanese will be able to stroll leisurely back to the islands the Soviets seized after WW2 and buy them off of the military stationed there for a dozen PS5's and a Dutch Wife or two.

Lmao watch them not only get South Kurils but also North Kurils, since barely anyone lives there might as well reunite the Kuril family, throw Sakhalin in the mix if things get real bad, surely I am sure they would appreciate having an island even north of Hokkaido

Now is a perfect time for them to get their islands back if they wanted.

How long will they stay "disputed", though?

Russia’s foreign ministry says there will be no improvement in ties unless Japan shows ‘respect’

I laughed hard when I read that.

By the way, Russia and Japan never formally ended WW II hostilities so after Russia is kicked out of Crimea, Japan can take back the island back that was once their own.

If these 2 countries never formally ended WWII hostilities, Japan should just flag those islands. It's a legal war after all.

The most respectful nation on the earth is not respectful enough for Russia, go figure.

I wonder if Russia will start taking the China approach, i.e. physically claim the islands with military presence and argue later?

dogeimistic t1_j6c8ij3 wrote

They're doing this already in Ukraine.

Ah yes, thank you for the reminder, how silly of me.

Guess I better re-phrase my statement:

I wonder if Russia will start taking the China approach for these "disputed" islands as well?

They are under russian jurisdiction already. If Japan were to do anything russia will threaten with nukes etc, so maybe they will wait until this iteration of russia falls apart.

dogeimistic t1_j6c996q wrote

I guess that would cause a war on 2 fronts which they can't really afford at the moment.

The only scenario I see for these islands to officially become exclusively part of Japan is if there is direct conflict between Russia and the US and Russia is put in a position where it has no choice but to cede the islands, first to the US and then to Japan from there. This is extremely unlikely to occur and even if it does it’s not like Japan will have great plans for the islands. They will mostly likely become US military bases, like in Okinawa but cold and miserable

The US is planning a new base farther north in Alaska (the current one is in Anchorage). This would be plenty close enough to strike whatever they want in eastern Russia and to defend the arctic.

Besides, they have bombers and missiles with enough range to go anywhere.
