Japan never stopped importing crude oil from russia, majority of it was through pipeline which operated for this entire time.

So I am sure there is a TON of logistics that I know I am unawares of, BUT in the end it does seem that the result is:
Japan carries Ukrainian blood on their hands by purchasing Russian crude.
PotatoRover t1_j25mt2k wrote
I mean, Ukraine itself makes money off of Russian pipelines that pass through its territory currently WHILE fighting Russia. Japan isn’t as fortunate as places like the u.s who are energy independent. All of east Asia is extremely dependent on oil from the Middle East and Russia. It’s buy oil from totalitarian Russia or totalitarian Saudi Arabia or shut down your country so you don’t buy from bad people which is a non starter.

Ukraine would gladly cut those pipelines if the recipients weren't part of the block that helps Ukraine survive.
It's not like Ukraine has much choice in that matter.
Japan does.

Money rules the world. Someone hasn’t heard of that. Apparently a lot of western companies still operate in Russia by operating under a different brand name, not sure how true that is but wouldn’t be surprised.

Depends how you frame it, perhaps they're doing it because their people are suffering from the oil prices. There's a certain amount of egoism that you have to accept from a government of a country. Is it wrong for a country to put their citizens' needs ahead of another's?
Honest question. Idk if that's Japan's motivation at the day..
K1St3 t1_j25ey4k wrote
No, it's actually because the government alongside some corporations like Mitsubishi had already invested billions in the Sakhalin-2 project. When the invasion started, instead of stopping investments or withdrawing from the project, they've instead chosen to double down by investing more.
Oil price in Japan is fine, there are also a lot of affordable public transports such as bus, trains & high-speed trains (which often corporations cover the cost too).
All of the foreign parties that have invested in the project can totally afford that loss as not only they are massive (Mitsubishi is just that big), they were already aware years before about the potential risk of a sudden loss of their shares so they are prepared for it.
So no, that decision is just a lack of morals & greed. Now that they have affirmed their commitment back in August 2022, they'll have to cooperate, provide technical support, spare parts, etc. which means untouchable by sanctions guaranteeing a tremendous profit for russia (60% of share) on the long term.
JonoNexus t1_j25hs3m wrote
Ok, this is a more interesting take. I didn't know that. Then I'd probably agree with the general sentiment.
The only part I'm not 100% on is about public transport. In my country, the oil shortage isn't a problem because of transport prices but because energy bills have quadrupled (or more even). I think if they ended up getting oil from Russia to lower the prices for average folks, then I wouldn't condemn them.

No it does not depend how you frame it. You're talking about motive. Motive is moot to the comment:
> Japan carries Ukrainian blood on their hands by purchasing Russian crude.
All of the above is true no matter why they do it.
JonoNexus t1_j24x9m7 wrote
I think the comment is inherently a moral condemnation. I mean, they don't literally have blood on their hands. At that point I think the motive is relevant to their actions. I dont see what the point is of saying someone has blood on their hands otherwise.

It was inevitable.
EU, Japan, India, China and maybe more.
We cant survive on US and middle east help alone. Russia has oil. We need it. We need it for best prices which Russia will probably offer.
If people say these countries support Ukrainian war then every Windows or Apple user for past 20 years supported US wars in Middle East. You support the "genocide" in China by having most things in your house made in China. Millions of people who tuned in or turned up to Qutar football supports the treatment of their workers.
List can go on and on. And you know what? I dont care. Because it is my job not to care about these things.

Balrok99 t1_j269mwi wrote
Not everyone offers it for the same price.
Besides when you know something is NEEDED then you would be stupid to sell it dirt cheap. Besides if Russia offers the best price then you also save a bit on transport since ME is not right next to Japan like Russia is.
Put your morals aside. They have no place in today's world.

Except you still have to import all your fuel from other countries, who in turn get it from Russia.

hunisher1 t1_j25fao1 wrote
Yeah his comment wasn’t very bright. In fact Japan and Russia still have a contested territory from WW2.
Also not at their mercy whatsoever. Japan has a strong and actively growing military. It’s like this guy forgot one of the first major losses by a western military (to a non-western one) was when Japan defeated Russia prior to WWI and annihilated large swathes of the Russian navy.
Not to mention the very very close military alliance Japan has with the United States.
Edit: Russia isn’t exactly the “west” but my point is they were a modernized and fairly massive military at the time. Also I’m not a historian so everyone take this with a grain of salt.
