Are Chinese really getting sick? or is this because they are really afraid of getting covid because of how CCP conditioned them with lockdowns?

Because these are two very different things. At the start of covid, you would get confined in the hospital when you test positive even with minor symptoms. But things are different now, we might not even need to see a doctor when we get covid.
