Not inspected properly though.

Corruption?

Cheaper to bribe an official to pass a safety check on a bridge than to actually make it safe.

There's a nice video about corruption in the Russian army prior to the Ukraine war and why it's so corrosive (basically a small amount lost to corruption causes much more damage downstream, not having fuel in your tanks for your invasion of Kyiv costs millions of times more more than the fuel cost itself)

Can’t blame the builders. Maybe they got their side commission but can’t say they did a shoddy job bcoz this is a old bridge with a reported capacity of 100. But around 500 were reportedly on that bridge overcrowding it.

The problem is with the administration that allowed such overcrowding and the people who thought it wouldn’t collapse…

There’s a video of people flocking and overcrowding it with people actually trying to sway the bridge! The type of shit we see stupid people do by fucking around and finding out.

Over 78 confirmed dead and many still trapped in the water. There's no electricity in the area which is making rescue operations difficult (it's night in India). A clearer picture will probably emerge in the morning.

The bridge was hurriedly renovated and re-opened 4 days ago without proper checks/fitness certificate because elections are coming up.

There's a video of people trying to swing the bridge being circulated on twitter and broadcast live on TV to blame the victims and deflect the blame from the government. Someone has fact-checked it, it's actually a 4-yr old video. There is vegetation in this old video but today, there was no vegetation, only water in the river. Also this video is during daylight while the bridge collapsed after dark. Also note the upload date of the video on youtube.
