Why do people talk like foreign relations is like some interpersonal drama. They only “freak out” in so far as they affirm their current foreign policy.

Because it’s true. there’s so many examples of them freaky out over this. It’s comical. The most common phrase use is “they’ve hurt the feelings of the Chinese people.”

By reducing what is actually an abstract set of relations - foreign policy and politics, to petty drama… like you said, another “chinese freakout” you play exactly into what the ccp wants, you do see this organisation, this policy as “the chinese people”.
