Matter of fact is these artifacts has been in better condition in museums than they ever could have been in the hands of their original owners

Hmm, better condition to who? That’s very relative. The best condition would have been for them to stay belonging to their home.

Better to the humanity as a whole. Regardless of their place of origin, valuable historical artefacts should be preserved and protected in stable, academia driven non-corrupt secure countries that are capable to ensure their maintenance.
We don’t want keep these artefacts in places where tomorrow a military junta or isis can overthrow the government and then sell to private collectors or even destroy these items. Better safe than sorry.

In most cases and most countries yes but there are still some countries where Artifacts would be purposefully destroyed

That’s a colonialist fallacy.

That video is riddled with inaccuracies and completely misses the entire war in Syria that destroyed an incalculable amount of irreplaceable historical artifacts. The destruction of Aleppo was a tragedy that cannot be recovered from.
We cannot trust the only copies of irreplaceable historical artifacts to unstable middle eastern dictatorships. This is both self evident and proven by recent history.

Nevertheless, it is not the purview of the western world to hold hostage cultural artifacts of other nations. That is a reductionist attitude, left over from the era of patriarchal colonial control of most of these countries. Their cultural artifacts should be returned to them, and only retained in western museums where their respective national governments outright request the retention of those artifacts for protective purposes. Anything else is patriarchal colonialism all over again. It’s racist and it’s wrong.
WeirdIndependent1656 t1_iuguoop wrote
It’s not racist. There are many countries where the current rulers, who incidentally have nothing in common with the ancient inhabitants of the area, destroy antiquities. Putting humanity’s antiquities in their hands isn’t anti racist, it’s just stupid. Don’t give antiquities to the people who destroy antiquities if you want there to still be antiquities.

Bro hand over your valuables to me I swear I'll look after them really well.
borischung01 t1_iui4ikg wrote
Well. Are you a museum curator with a PhD? Qualified and have the funds, the humidity controlled storage facilities to maintain a valuable item?
defenestrate_urself t1_iui9dez wrote
If I was suitably qualified you'll hand it all over? It's a moot point though as most of the museum was looted. I would just come and raid your house.
borischung01 t1_iui9jsa wrote
In the name of preservation of human history, yes. Honestly.
defenestrate_urself t1_iuiak7p wrote
As if that was the intention in the first place, well done on justifying colonial atrocities in the name of cultural preservation to yourself.
