Nowhere will you find it ever having been listed as an objective to “destroy the Taliban” or any guerrilla or terrorist network. It was always a goal to minimize the organizations power and influence to conduct terrorist activities against western nations. The objectives obviously evolved over the decades. And preventing the Taliban from regaining control was a longer term objects, at which they failed. But I wouldn’t call that a war objective. That was a post war victory (while occupying) objective more than it was a “war objective.”

Their main objective was too demolished and dismantle every group which might become a threat to the West. They have failed to do so since the Taliban have recaptured Afghanistan and the West is pretty much back to square one. The USA has negotiated with the Taliban so that can leave in peace. If you think the West have won the war then you are naive or in denial.

Here are the objectives in a formal review in 2009. You won’t find any objective that says “destroy the Taliban”. In fact, much of the focus was on Al Queda and it’s support from the Taliban. I’m afraid you are guilty of revisionist history and are ignoring much of what was achieved and only focusing on the recency bias of the post war occupation failures. Al-queda strength and power globally has waned (albeit is on the rise). But the Al-queda in Afghan now have a paltry presence with minimal support… for now.

Seems like the goal change in the middle of war. After 9/11 the USA was pretty much determined to destroy every other groups which is the threat to the USA that is the reason why USA invade Afghanistan in the first place. The USA never able to demolish the network, they manage to slow the process and have disturbed their presence to some extent, but they never manage to exterminate them. After spending 20 years on the field, they never fully crack the networks of this Al Qaida sure they might have destroyed thousands of networks, but it does not matter unless it's fully destroyed. Anyway if you want to look at the objective which been completed then be my guest, for me, I am continuing to look at Trillion of dollars Tax dollars has been wasted on the war which have not been won by the Nato and the west.
