The independence movement isn't what it was in the 50s but it hasn't been "annihilated"--turnout in the 2017 referendum was just over 20% and the pro-independence parties boycotted it. Statehood would probably still win if a real, binding vote were taken (in part because chronic refusal to invest in PR has left it with little infrastructure or capital and pragmatically independence would be difficult) but there is certainly still an active independence movement. Took the picture below in San Juan last week in fact:
