We had our first child 2 weeks ago from Sibley and was wondering how we get the SSN. I filled out the paperwork at the hospital and was told they would take care of it. The process seems opaque. Do we just wait? How am I supposed to get my child insurance without any documents?

We had our first child in November, also at Sibley. Our child’s Social Security card arrived in the mail 3-4 weeks after her birth, but you’ll need to order a birth certificate separately from the DC Office of Vital Records. We did that recently too and it cost about $60 with delivery.

RE: Insurance, they know you won’t have a number right away and shouldn’t require it right away. You’ll update it with them when it comes in the mail.

They might want a picture of the crib card though.

As another poster said, you’ll have to order the birth certificate yourself, probably should be able to do that soon.

Gwu gave me a letter for the insurance company, I think it was called a certification of live birth. I then updated with the insurance company when I got the SSN. Maybe Sibley does something similar?

Had kid at Sibley in September. They gave you a yellow folder after the birth of your kid. It had birth certificate Forms in it. You were asked to fill them out before you left so that the hospital could do the paperwork.

If you did, they submitted the data to DC dept of vital records. You will have to go online to their website and request / pay for the birth certificate.

DC Sept of vital records will submit your newborns info to the social security administration and you should get a social security card in the mail within 6 weeks if birth. If you don’t within 8 weeks, call social security as something is amiss.

Oh, golly, I had this trouble when my kid was born there with getting a birth certificate. They do not in fact “take care of it.” You have to call them and bug them. Maybe also talk to the DC Department of Vital Records or whatever it is.

Sibley will enter the information from the form you filled out . You can usually get your insurance without the Ssn but have x days to add it. We had no issues. Our card never arrived (stolen) so check with SSA in 3 weeks if you haven’t received it. We had to provide more paperwork since it was stolen but it did arrive 2 weeks later .

Insurance for the first month is automatic through mom’s insurance. Just give them a call.

Read the paper work you filled out. It says everything right there.
