I hit my limit on ubereats — I can’t rationalize the 15% fee, while also knowing the restaurants pays a fee. I definitely can’t rationalize it without a 40% off promo code.

I’m wondering what restaurants around DC offer delivery independently - either through their website or over the phone. Happy to pay a delivery fee, but looking to go directly through the restaurant rather than door dash, Uber, caviar or anything else

Dumplings and Beyond

LOVE Dumplings and Beyond and have turned so many of my friends onto them. One of our favorite traditions is getting a crap ton of their stuff delivered for New Year Day or Christmas Day. When I fell outside their delivery radius and it was the worst of times. I've begrudgingly gone back to delivery service.

I love that I live 5 blocks from this place. I do pickup. That xiao long bao #blessed 🙏🏼🥟

Glover park gang rise up. Fastest delivery I’ve had from them was 15 min flat.

I also sometimes walk over, easy enough to do pick up after getting groceries at robot Whole Foods.

Only a two mile radius though; the apps will deliver much farther than that and somehow from them it always still comes hot. Caviar recommended; it's the same as DoorDash (same company and UI, different skin) but they guarantee direct delivery.

Two mile covers a good chunk of the city. They aren’t a chain with a million drivers.

I know that Laos in town has no delivery fee. I’d also suggest to call the restaurant directly. I do that all the time and then I remind them that if I order online using their delivery app that they’re probably not receiving their full tip. I get that people get delivery out of convenience or not having a car but damn- those fees are so excessive. I just prefer to dine in or pick it up.

We get Thai food from Royal Thai often and usually have the same woman deliver. She is delightful and makes the great food even better.

I stopped going to Royal Thai. Portions have changed. I would rather have them go up on the price. I hear that some restaurants prefer using Toast over other delivery services.

Also always worth checking if the restaurant uses ChowNow. It's a lower commission fee for the restaurants and you can tip the restaurant directly.

It's usually why you'll see menu items cheaper on a ChowNow menu than Uber.

Watch your receipts for the extra credit card fees too.

New Dynasty in DuPont has free and fast delivery. They also deliver directly to my apartment unlike every delivery service in the city that just leave it at the front desk.

Where do you live? Delivery should only been done nearby.

Andy's (which I /love/) routes through DoorDash and we've had a few issues with their delivery. I still do it, but it's not actually independent delivery.

Have you considered picking up the food yourself?? It’s about as independent as it gets.

The vast majority of time I'm getting delivery it's because it would be illegal and just a very bad idea in general for me to be driving to pick it up.

djexploit t1_itgk136 wrote

There's a significant portion of the population that cannot pickup the food themselves, for medical/etc reasons. Being unaware of this is as oblivious as it gets.

Or just not having a car, something that I thought this sub heavily encouraged.
