Another apparently frequently used option is to replace #1 and #2 with “Steal a car”.

Oh no, you put said Printed Temp MD Tag on the stolen car after you have a juvenile steal it for you!
MD doesn't have reciprocity or any number for DC police to pull up, so just drive easy.
Car won't match the plates, because there are no plates, just a beautiful, newly printed paper Maryland Temp Tag!

The fact that paper temp tags exist is a little silly in principle. All states (plus DC) should make some kind of change to temp tags that a) you can spot from 20 feet away, and b) can't be fucking printed on an inkjet.

Just be normal DC citizen and steal a screwdriver from the local family-owned Ace Hardware, and then use it to pry off someone else's plate (NOT screw off, you have to pry it off until it breaks something), and then stick it in the rear window of your shitty stolen Lincoln SUV with the useless muffler pathetically dangling off the rear axle like.

Expecting someone to have a printer, let alone one that works, is so boujie. Sheesh.

It obviously increases crime and hampers law enforcement.

Our government (all levels) spares no expense at creating barriers to our pursuit of happiness…

But on this one purchase that usually involves thousands and tens of thousands of dollars they find the most streamlined system in the entire system.

Mind boggling

They should just get rid of them outright. Massachusetts doesn't use temporary tags. You get your metal plate from the dealer when you purchase the car or register it first at the registry of motor vehicles before you drive it off the lot. It's not that hard of a system to implement.

MA does have temp tags, it’s just they’re only issued in limited circumstances, like you ordered a vanity or specialty plate. All the RMVs can give you a normal plate pretty much on-demand, hence why the dealers can get ahold of them prior to you driving your car away.

I don’t understand why every Maryland temp tag isn’t automatically pulled over. I regularly see expired temp tags everyday driving.

To be fair, when I registered my car in DC (transfered from elsewhere), I got my tags then and there.

Though, my other car around the same time I bought at a dealer in Virginia and it needed long enough to get my DC tags that I needed new temp tags.

Odd enough, the first car has a higher number than the second car despite me getting the first car's tags earlier.

You think I’m renewing my registration after seeing how rampant this is? I’m buying a license plate cover too, and I’m gunna blackout my windshield. Can’t beat ‘em, join em. I’m done

It's not about the tags. It's about the city counsel and stupid police policy basically making it impossible to enforce crime

If this was nextdoor, we’d have to say “but those lawless cyclists!”

And then MD enters the chat “DC makes it so hard to drive in the city! Who has time to bike!”

Had someone steal a temp tag off the car. That’s the ticket. Why print when you can just uh… borrow … someone’s temp plates.

oxtailplanning t1_itz8fls wrote

Yeah sorry, next door would be complaining about a bike lane or about a stolen package.

These temp tags are accompanied by incredibly dangerous behavior that leads to serious injury or death. They're a real problem.

California just got paper temp tags lol. You used to be able to drive around with dealer ads/blanks and a small registration sticker affixed to your windshield while you waited for your metal plates to come in the mail. The plates came relatively fast but most people would wait as it made their car look “new” lol
