Almost none of those “Overheard” posts ever actually happened

Almost is being a bit generous.

Im sure theres a few in there which are true, but the vast majority are definitely fake and the kind of stuff people think of that makes them sound witty. From a recent post, claiming its overheard in a farmers market: "no ketamine or cocaine? what kind of farmers market is this?" I guarantee you that nobody said this. Nobody.

That’s something a teenager would say to their friend as a joke

Except that there actually are people with thousands of dollars in outstanding traffic/parking fines (and are still driving around free in those cars).

Barkmywords t1_itc4fhc wrote

Yea but $40k worth is not believable. They would certainly boot or tow the car way before that.

The ones where people from Kansas are disappointed the national mall doesn’t have shops are all real I bet

dumbdumbmen t1_itb3v9b wrote

Well I've really had people ask me where the "mall" is. And where the parking lot is.

My reaction to any of the ones that have a random passerby interjecting with a mildly offensive witty quip. People here won't intervene when someone's getting aggressively sexually harassed or physically assaulted on the same train as them...they're not going to randomly comment on someone's private convo.

fvb955cd t1_itaokht wrote

For a while the quipper was always a wise native dcer, while the foolish people were transplants in a transplant job like consulting, which apparently someone overhearing it just knew somehow.

They SENSED it was a troubled Aquarius needing to be snapped out of retrograde!

They're both feds just trying to bait whoever eavesdrops

Remember, every 1 in 3 person in DC is a fed, domestic or international

SurferNerd t1_itbo141 wrote

What exactly does “fed” mean here? I know it’s often used to refer to FBI agents, but also federal govt employees in general.

2

Less_Wrong_ t1_itbofs3 wrote

Fed is generally used as FBI or some other intelligence agency like CIA NSA etc

Referring as a ‘Fed’ to a regular federal government worker bee is laughable. PSA: Please don’t refer yourself as a Fed if you work HR at the USDA

Are you really gatekeeping civil service?

26

Less_Wrong_ t1_itbp5bb wrote

I’m not. You need to get better at reading comprehension.

In common parlance, ‘running away from the feds’ or ‘ feds talking to each other on forums (eg on 4chan feds trolling feds is a meme)’, it refers to intelligence agencies. Not attorneys, statisticians, hr workers, secretaries that happen to work for the federal government

I mean, if we're talking about "feds trying to bait eavesdroppers," I'm pretty sure everyone would understand the implication is some kind of federal policing agent and not like someone who clerks for a house rep or something

Edit: but I guess that's not really what you were responding to, my bad
