We live right on corner mentioned in the title. Because the intersection is at the bottom of a hill and Arkansas is at an oblique angle to 14th, drivers routinely fly through at 40-50 mph. My wife was almost hit today by a turning car and I’ve nearly been hit multiple times.

What can be done about this? What is the process for working with the city to make this area safer?

Good luck! Been trying to get a stop sign at 11th and Sherman for a year...

Yeah I know the intersection well. I can see how it would be dangerous for pedestrians. I don’t know how to fix it without causing significant traffic issues on 14th

I’ve honestly been studying pedestrian techniques of the streets of Vietnam (their cars don’t stop on busy streets), and implemented some of the techniques since I think DC drivers are very similar. The cars won’t stop, so pedestrians gotta be vigilant and creative.

Stay safe out there!

You could file a 311 request asking for a Traffic Safety Investigation at that intersection. In addition, it is probably worth reaching out to your ANC as a starting point. From looking at a map, it looks like this intersection falls in either 4C03 or 4C05 depending on which corner you're on. Contact info for those ANCs is here. They will know best what the history of DDOT's process in evaluating that intersection for traffic calming has been.

They can change the way that Arkansas intersects / put in traffic calming on Arkansas. Also, the way that people turn from 14 on Arkansas is insane, they can do something w/ the curbs from 14 and Arkansas without impacting north south traffic too much.
