How else would you treat substance abuse, insecurity, and lack of confidence?
Pathologizing at the earliest stages is the best approach to root the problem before it exponentially exacerbates. The gun violence stage is waaaay too late.

Exactly. Emotional intelligence is important. Cultural attitudes of toxic masculinity are emotionally unintelligent. We need to help others learn about their emotions, if you are mad then process that feeling. Do not act it out, speak it out. These are elementary/foundational principles that require pathologizing people's thoughts, feelings, or behaviors.

Spending another half billion per year on police should make it disappear, right?

"When Council member Janeese Lewis George asked Geldart how he tracks the success of the D.C. police, he referred to the impact made by a specific tactical operation to target and remove a neighborhood crew in Congress Heights.
“On MLK and Malcolm X right there where, you know, we did 13 arrests in like two days, we saw 60% reduction in violent crime that stayed for three months. We’re still seeing a reduction of 60%. That’s the metric; that’s what I’m looking at,” Geldart said.
A shooting near that intersection last July took the life of 6-year-old Nyiah Courtney."

So no, some amount of crime will always exist. However, removing known violent criminals from communities can make those communities safer.
We need to offer robust community services that provide opportunities for at-risk people, support services for society at large, and hold people accountable for gun crimes and violent crime for the sake of the rest of the community. Letting repeat offenders continue to inflict trauma on the rest of their community does nobody good.

No need. Crime isn't really happening in DC these days.

So we had republicans blaming mental health to not do any gun reform.
And liberals blaming mental health for the perpetrators crime. Huh 🤔
Substance abuse is a mental health. Having horrible conditions like schizo, bipolar is mental health condition. But majority of those people, i repeat overwhelmingly majority do not kill someone, rob them on gunpoint, carjack. Their crimes are mostly limited to petty theft. At least thats what it historically used to be. But since we are not doing absolutely anything for teedn-adults violent crimes which can be financially lucrative this may not last. I mean why u risk jail time for a 20 dollar store lift when u can get few grand doing a car jacking?

Can we stop pathologizing everything, including crime? People in DC mostly aren't shooting each other because of mental illness, but because of material interests (drugs, turf) and cultural attitudes (machismo, honor, "beef").
