This is my first National Cherry Blossom Festival. My wife and I moved here back in June and I don't remember the Metro being as crazy packed as it was today.

Is it just me or does it seem like an unusually larger number of people on the Metro this weekend?

It’s pretty crazy today. Yesterday had bad weather weather so everyone is going to to the tidal basin today

Yea probably due to weather yesterday, everyone decided to go today. Plus it’s the Kite Festival today too on top of peak bloom.

If the problem is “the Metro is so packed with tourists” who have come to town, bringing tourism $ with them (on Metro, nonetheless!)… wow, what a great problem to have! Edit: TBC, I know you didn’t say this is a problem as such, OP.

I've never seen so many Cherry Blossom postings on here . So this year seems different

I think the FOMO over the cherry blossoms has been amplified by social media.

A few years ago we had a brilliant day similar to this - 68 degrees, sunny, blue skies - that coincided with peak bloom. It was pretty busy but it didn't seem anywhere as crazy as it does this year. Not nearly as many blossom photos on Reddit either.

The mall area is essentially peak tourist season from early March to early June. But yes peak bloom is always especially bonkers. The tree lighting is another predictable bonkers event.

I had an unrelated event where I had to get off at Smithsonian this afternoon and I thought I'd walked into the zombie apocalypse

Weekend + nice weather (especially after multiple crappy days in a row) + peak bloom = one of the busiest days of the entire year
