Do you have any tips of where I can find apartments with rooms to rent that aren't full of scammy listings?

I've used Craigslist.

A good way to filter out scammers is to always meet at the actual apartment. Don't ever send anyone a dime or give them a ton of information until after you have been inside the apartment.

Thanks. I used to use Craigslist, years ago, but didn't know if it had changed to scam-central. I will check it out.

Still legit considering just sleeping in my car, but I'll take a chance on being able to find a sub $800 room in the area.
