Reminds me of when Geoff Berner wrote about Vancouver shutting down the department that investigated children's murders at the same time they devoted billions to hosting the winter olympics. The dead, dead children were worth it

They should learn from the US states that just abolished slavery ;)

Meanwhile, the EU backs away slowly whistling nonchalantly. Can't let the FIFA thing remind people to look into how their social welfare system is paid for ultimately. I know we do the same shady business practices too but I'm just here to annoy the people who think the EU is above all that because "they're better than the US."

Oh you mean proper taxation?

Yeah, terrible, those poor billionaires.

Schmich t1_iwq4edf wrote

Don't you know the billionaires worked hard and earned it? All on their own, and it's definitely not built upon the pillars of society.

Some nice whataboutism there. You do realize you can criticize both for different reasons right?

The EU has massive corruption issues as well as a large rise of right nationalism. I think having seen Brexit happen, the Dutch and Irish dodging corporate taxes like Neo and Hungary turning into a semi-dictatorship makes it pretty clear there are problems, no?

TIL all westerners agree with slavery in 2022. Go touch some grass

There's a difference between slavery being not only legal but a state institution, and slavery being propagated by criminals that the police have not yet caught.

amethystwyvern t1_iwpxtgm wrote

Lol there is no slavery in the west. You hold slaves.

Our prison systems in many cases are in fact legalized slavery, otherwise I agree.

amethystwyvern t1_iwq6w27 wrote

I'll cede that our prison system is trash but other than that all the above replies are silly. Human trafficking is not the same as legalized slavery.

That's not comparable.

lost_in_my_thirties t1_iwqfkob wrote

By this point three people have told you that you are wrong and all you can say "that does not fit what I mean by slavery". Maybe explain your point better or accept that the word you are using has a wider meaning than you think.

Most likely you just wanted to have a cheap swipe at a group of people / culture you do not like. Maybe used your time better and read some of the links I posted.

amethystwyvern t1_iwqfrai wrote

Ok. I've replied to each person individually but ok. So you're wrong because an illegal trade in immigrants is not comparable to legalized official slavery😀.

uprootsockman t1_iwq2lv7 wrote

That is an incredibly naive and ignorant take. Slavery is rampant in the west. It might not be as open and deliberate as in Qatar, but it is prevalent.
