I was wondering if anyone knew of any in-demand trades in VT area (Burlington specifically). I’m a bit of a generalist, but have my most experience as an HVAC tech/electrician/carpenter. We are planning on eventually moving to VT and I want to hone in on a specific skill/apprenticeship before the move next year. I know furnaces are popular up there, but I’m in Florida, not a lot of those down here.

The trend is towards heat pumps now that their performance at low temps have improved. Also, retrofitting new heat pumps using existing ductwork.

Many Vermonters want to shift off fossil fuels so going all electric or solar is popular.
All trades are in desperate demand here but the pay rates seem to be much lower than in other parts of the country. Maybe an HVAC tech or electrician can chime in?
All trades are in demand. Licensure for plumbers and electricians especially is necessary and extensive. Carpenters are not required to be licensed.

In my area at least, forced air furnace systems seem to be rare. A lot of homes have multi-zone boiler/radiator setups. Regardless, any of the trades you listed are needed up here.

If you're into HVAC look at companies like New England Air Systems, Mountain Air, VT Mechanical, Avonda. A. Cooper Mechanical pays $46/hr starting for plumbers plus benefits and tools.

You name it, you’ll find work—esp if you’re ethical & competent.
It's not 46 take home pay. It's 46 including pension, health care etc. Pretty sure the take home pay at Cooper and mountain air is around 30-35. Both are union. NEA, VT Mech, Avonda, Alliance, are all non union but similar take home pay. Granted that's for a fully licensed tech. If you are new It's going to be around 17 an hour and goes up from there depending on experience and the amount of licenses you hold. Hvac you are going to need plumbing s, electrical s, EPA, Nat GAS and propane, oil.
