Maple Syrup Shipping

Hello everyone,

Very seldom do I need to buy syrup as friends/family tend to produce and gift it occasionally.

I'm looking to send ~6 bottles to coworkers in another state and thought to just buy and ship to them, though safely packing and shipping seems like it would balloon the cost.

Does anyone have recommendations for a fine local product that:

  • Ships
  • Glass Bottles (The leaf ones are a bit much, but the little plastic tubs don't make for elegant gifting)
  • Priced somewhat well (~$10 / 16 oz or so)

Am I being unrealistically cheap here? Also, apologies for the overly picky bottle specification!

16oz VT maple syrup in glass will cost $14 and up before shipping.

Send the plastic jug.

I second Runamok. They get creative with flavored maples (think maple-vanilla-cinnamon) and cocktail mixers in addition to straight up maple syrup.

If I ship maple syrup or beer I use the USPS large flat rate shipping boxes ($22 per I believe). you walk in pick them up for free, pack at home and pay when you are ready to ship. Anything liquid I would suggest putting in a ziplock at the very least, just in case something leaks and fill all the dead space with bubble wrap and news paper.

USPS now wants absorbent material inside the Ziploc — I believe it’s if the container is more than 4oz but I might have the volume wrong. I’ve always used zip bags when sending syrup, but this last time they had me repack to add paper towels in the bag (not just in the box) before they’d accept it.

I would tape the caps as well. I have had the altitude change from being flown cause the ones there were overfilled to “pop” and fill the bag they were in.

Champlain Orchards has great glass packaging and each 16oz bottle is $14.99 I believe.

You won't find 16oz glass bottles for $10

Can’t say enough good things about Branon Family Maple. They sustainably manage their sugarbush and all their equipment is new so you don’t have to worry about lead contamination like many of the older smaller operations. They usually ship the next day and their customer service is amazing

April's Maple ships and is open daily except Tuesday. Their website has online store. If you are ever in the NEK I cannot recommend April's enough as a must stop! She does an amazing job with her Cafe. Farm to Table all real! So good. I'm glad I live 20 miles away for I'd weigh 400 pounds. 10% milk fat in the Maple creamees. 🍁

I didn’t look up their options/pricing before posting but I ordered the little nip bottles for my wedding favors from Sugarbush Farm in Woodstock, and had a pleasant buying experience :)

Couture's Maple Shop is internationally renowned, ships internationally, in glass bottles, and is priced reasonably.

They have tons of other maple products too. The maple popcorn, maple covered peanuts, and hard candies are amazing

I think as you're here in Vermont, you're going to be able to find quality Maple sugar products pretty much anywhere you go - ask locally first. I'm more comfortable shipping the plastic jugs - if people don't like those containers, they can always pour the syrup off into something more acceptable (in my home we regularly use a glass decanter that we fill as needed from the gallon jug).

Runamok is the move for neat gifts. Unfortunately you won't find what you're looking for at the price you're looking at.

We don't produce our own but our neighbor taps almost 1000 of our trees and gives us syrup (and some cash) in return. He just gives me gallon jugs, and while I do basically drink the stuff I have to try to go through a gallon in a year. So we are left with usually a half dozen gallons or so of syrup which is way more than we need.

So what we do is have a day sometime between Thanksgiving and Christmas where my wife and I have drinky poos, we warm up a shitload of the sryup in a giant carafe, and then we aliquot it off into smaller more decorative bottles.

This year we gave syrup to everyone in our immediate and extended family, all of my employees, and all of my wife's employees. It was over 60 12oz bottles. Final cost for us was something like $2/bottle but that's because the syrup was free. I honestly have no clue what a gallon of syrup would cost you (depends on many things) but I can buy one from my neighbor for about $40-$50 depending on the season. That will make 10 12oz bottles. So you're looking at about $7 per bottle in that case which isn't bad.

If you want to ship glass, get bubble wrap and be generous with it. Then make sure there is no empty space in the box. Fill it with more bubble wrap or lots of newsprint.

You have to think that you're preparing the pages to take a hundred pounds on top of it, because it shipping that will happen.
