Woodstock is kind of depressing. If you like pretty old houses, it might be worth walking the Main Street, but lookout for contractors and angry locals barreling down the road shooting you dirty looks. This town should be thriving, but instead, building owners are charging a fortune for retail space, forcing small time businesses to pay garbage wages to people who can’t afford to live here. It’s a Disney prop town that’s lost its direction. The Woodstock Inn which is owned by the Rockefeller trust essentially subsidizes the town’s existence, resting on the laurels of their golden days. Take a peek, but don’t believe the hype. This is a shining example of why Vermonters feel they can’t thrive in their own home state. If you’ve got a few million dollars, you can buy a dilapidated Victorian or colonial with a nice paint job over rotted cladding.

If you decide to stop by anyways, here’s what’s to do after your 4 hour stop in Woodstock:

Hall Art Foundation in Reading, Vermont Salvage and Kishka Gallery in White River Junction, Von Trapp Family Lodge in Stowe, Marsh Brothers Deli in Lebanon NH, American Precision Museum in Windsor, Quechee Antique Mall in Quechee, Takeout Indian food from Taj-E in White River Junction, Dog Mountain in St. Johnsbury, Cedar Circle Farm in Thetford, Carrier Roasting Co in Northfield.

Restaurants have limited seating, call now for reservations.

Literally never seen this once and have spent a ton of time in Woodstock.

Multiple new small businesses have opened in the last few years, and it’s been listed in a number of publications as a top New England tourist destination. It has constant free music, art, farmer’s markets, theater, festivals, etc.

Yes they own/subsidize many things in town - including xc ski/snowshoe trails that anyone can use and a ski area with very reasonable lift ticket prices… this is a bad thing?

One look on Zillow and you’re obviously not even close. A few million dollars will get you some of the nicest houses in Woodstock

OP, despite the devolution in commentary from the peanut gallery, the list compiled in my original text is solid, and are great destinations. Eat a snack before you go out to find a table, and tip your servers well.
