Hey all - visiting Woodstock this week with my partner and another couple from out of town. Looking for any local recommendations or special happenings this weekend (Saturday / Sunday)!

Looking for anything and everything Christmas related. We plan to stop over in Stowe for an afternoon on the drive in. Well aware most of Woodstock will be in full Christmas gear. - any specific recommendations on things to do, places to see / visit, and where to eat and drink?

TIA

  1. Go to Billings Farm and the National Park. They have a bunch of Christmas related stuff like a decked out old Farmhouse and Sleigh rides!
  2. Check out the decorations/Gingerbread House at the Woodstock Inn and get a drink there or Au Comptoir
  3. Go to Simon Pearce and check out the glas blowing.
  4. Go to Dinner at Melaza! It’s really good!
  5. An underrated gem is the Brownsville Country Store. Great food and relatively cheap!

Right next to simon pierce is the only tasting room for whistle pig. It’s pricey but you can do a flight and check out the different liquor…mostly rye.

Mont Vert cafe for coffee/brunch. On the weekend, you’ll wait awhile for food and seating is limited, but coffee is pretty good. Village Butcher is a must for lunch. Their meats selection is great and sandwiches are delicious. For some shopping, stop into Gillingham’s General Store and Vermont Flannel. I could spend hours in Gillingham’s finding cool things and if you aren’t from VT, Vermont Flannel is a quirky place to stop that sums up the stereotype of the state.

Have a fun trip! Enjoy the crowds.

I have no idea how far of a drive it is from where you are visiting, but my suggestion is the Vermont Country Store. I haven’t been there in maybe 20 years so I hope it’s still open. Awesome memories

Woodstock is kind of depressing. If you like pretty old houses, it might be worth walking the Main Street, but lookout for contractors and angry locals barreling down the road shooting you dirty looks. This town should be thriving, but instead, building owners are charging a fortune for retail space, forcing small time businesses to pay garbage wages to people who can’t afford to live here. It’s a Disney prop town that’s lost its direction. The Woodstock Inn which is owned by the Rockefeller trust essentially subsidizes the town’s existence, resting on the laurels of their golden days. Take a peek, but don’t believe the hype. This is a shining example of why Vermonters feel they can’t thrive in their own home state. If you’ve got a few million dollars, you can buy a dilapidated Victorian or colonial with a nice paint job over rotted cladding.

If you decide to stop by anyways, here’s what’s to do after your 4 hour stop in Woodstock:

Hall Art Foundation in Reading, Vermont Salvage and Kishka Gallery in White River Junction, Von Trapp Family Lodge in Stowe, Marsh Brothers Deli in Lebanon NH, American Precision Museum in Windsor, Quechee Antique Mall in Quechee, Takeout Indian food from Taj-E in White River Junction, Dog Mountain in St. Johnsbury, Cedar Circle Farm in Thetford, Carrier Roasting Co in Northfield.

Restaurants have limited seating, call now for reservations.

Lol this is wildly incorrect. You’ll love Woodstock, OP, don’t worry

You don’t have to like what I said, but it is not incorrect. Stay here a while, you’ll see…

Well let’s see:

>contractors and angry locals barreling down the road…

Literally never seen this once and have spent a ton of time in Woodstock.

>This town should be thriving

Multiple new small businesses have opened in the last few years, and it’s been listed in a number of publications as a top New England tourist destination. It has constant free music, art, farmer’s markets, theater, festivals, etc.

>Woodstock Inn…

Yes they own/subsidize many things in town - including xc ski/snowshoe trails that anyone can use and a ski area with very reasonable lift ticket prices… this is a bad thing?

>A few million dollars for a dilapidated Victorian

One look on Zillow and you’re obviously not even close. A few million dollars will get you some of the nicest houses in Woodstock

So, yea, like I said - pretty much entirely incorrect ✌🏼

OP, despite the devolution in commentary from the peanut gallery, the list compiled in my original text is solid, and are great destinations. Eat a snack before you go out to find a table, and tip your servers well.
