It originally was Vert Mont then the T was dropped and the other two words were put together to make it “Vermont” I learned this in teaching my kids about Vermont from homeschooling

Dropping the T seems quite natural, the name rolls of the tongue better without it. Interesting!

Also you don't pronounce the T in Vert Mont. So by default it sounds like Very Mont, or Vermont.

Well French speakers don’t ofc, but obviously English colonists using the name did pronounce the T, or they wouldn’t have reason to drop it. I would think anyway.
