The 7days part is gold. I often wonder if advertisers know that that paper’s distribution numbers are greatly increased due to wood stoves.

Bad news tho. It smells terrible when you burn that much bullshit.

I keep thinking about going digital ( with all my monthly bills) but then id have to actually spend money on buying paper/starter stuff to light the stove with. Just wish that glossy stuff would be banned.

We got one today too. Planning to mark “REFUSED, RETURN TO SENDER” to give the Post Office more business on these jackholes’ dime.

OMG, I got one of these, today. But I hit up my mailbox at the start of my afternoon dog walk, so I haven’t really looked at it, yet. Guess I should now go back and read all the posts to find out what it is 😆

7th Day Adventists, right? Did they blanket all of New England, or just Vermont?

Either way, it is some much needed revenue (with little or no increase in expense)] for our beleaguered postal system!

Got one too. What do you think the blast mail of these books cost in total? Does anyone know who they're targeting? This is a multi million $ campaign for sure.

I got that, too. What a waste of paper. Probably cost them a ton to print and ship all of those, too. Oh well, right in the recycling bin.

Almost verbatim conversation in our house--"what the hell is this? Catholics? Whatever it is, it'll make a good firestarter, since it's been a little chilly..." A lot of Little Free Libraries are going to be overflowing with these things in the very near future.

Wow, this is EXACTLY what came to mind when my wife showed me what came in the mail. Find it hilarious how many think alike. You’d think the people spending money on this would recognize that VT is the least religious state and not worth their time….

I’ve never even heard of a 7 day Adventist before. How odd. I didn’t know there were religions that were anti Vatican. I don’t know too much about religion in general, but a whole ass book in the mail seems extreme lol

I am so glad im not the only one that got one, I thought one of the neighbors was watching and thinking I need some Jesus, I mean I probably do but I am glad this wasn't a targeted goal by someone I know.

Waco was the Branch Davidians who were a doomsday branch of 7DA since like the 50’s. If I recall a podcast I listened to about them, 7DA did not consider them part of the church for quite some time.

That's funny! Average minds think alike!

My cousins were Mormon, and back when they were doing mission trips, it turned out that the highest conversion rates they were getting were in Utah, specifically in Salt Lake city. The church had just assumed everyone was Mormon and want proselytizing there. I can see a similar thinking here, that the least religious state is a great place to gin up some converts. It could potentially be pretty fertile ground.

brainzilla420 OP t1_it2tace wrote

I had a similar thought, that my anti-theism had been "discovered" (in not particularly quiet about it). But alas, someone with deep pockets is gaining entry into the imaginary afterlife. Good for them.

As for needing Jesus, you're probably doing just fine without him. He was clearly a socialist, so maybe Republicans need Jesus, but i think we're doing pretty alright on our own.

I threw mine right in the bin, everyone in my town got one too and the various uses of the book are becoming more and more creative. I think one neighbor is using it to make paper mache!

Every day, when I catch her just sitting there staring at me and judging me, I spend at LEAST a minute telling her it's ok - if you can talk, I won't tell anyone.

"I know you can talk. Just do it. I'll give you some catnip! Or, if you don't, maybe your food rations will be cut in half. Your choice, Boo."

As of yet, no luck.

I got my copy with a Jehovah's Witness mailing the next day.

Both the SDAs and JW have an end times theology. They think this is IT- game over. To be fair, I can see why they're losing it. We're giving them a lot of material to work with!

I have a wood stove chipper if you've got any old ones that need chipping. I also have chipper stove wood, also. it's super upbeat and chatty until you put it in. Then it kind of screams and it makes me a little sad. Warm and sad.

brainzilla420 OP t1_it4qcdw wrote

I'll give benefit of the doubt here and assume this is a serious question.

Rarely is life so black and white that some is good or bad. Is burning a book in and of itself a "bad" thing? I think no (apologies, librarians!) This book is no more important to me than any other junk mail i get, so i see no problem in burning one book, by myself, in my stove. Just as i wouldn't give a fig if you took a book, any book, and burned it in your stove.

Where i see book burning becoming problematic is when it is used to incite a group against another group. Intentionally seeking out a book, be it dr. Seuss, the talmud, the koran, to kill a mockingbird, or any of the myriad books that folks have chosen to burn, en masse, over the years, is very different than having a book foisted on you. Book burning rallies are often an attempt to "other" a specific, usually minority, group, to dehumanize them and their culture and often to incite violence towards them.

What i have done here isn't that. I haven't called for violence, nor persecution of the the 7th day Adventists. Instead, i view this as a transgression on the part of the 7th day Adventists. As the aggressors here, they chose to send this to me and, in a small act of self-defense, I've chosen to burn this piece of shit. I'm not seeking out other copies to burn, nor advocating the eradication of 7th day Adventists and their thinking through violence. This is the difference between burning a book in my stove and holding a klan rally book burning.

Really disturbing news - Vermonters weren’t the only ones to get mailed these: “The mass mailing of the book is part of Remnant Publications’ efforts to cover North American cities with 10 million copies of The Great Controversy, the Seventh Day Adventists’ flagship publication. Over the last several years, it’s mass-mailed nearly seven million of copies of the book written in 1858 to cities like Washington, D.C., Charlotte, N.C., San Francisco and even sent a million copies to residents of Manhattan, according to Remnant CEO Dwight Hall.”

The printing cost is estimated at $1 each, plus shipping. If the SDA’s really want to help people (and the environment) there has to be a LOT of better ways to spend $10,000,000 plus!!
