Don't take it personally. In recent years Vermont has had high retail theft rates, both in terms of frequency and $ value. It sucks because 99.9% of the population here are honest enough to literally correct an under charge, but many stores across the state have become targets for theft-- Costco, Walmart, Shaws, Hannafords, Home Depot, Lowes, etc. all now have new loss prevention strategies because of how often stuff was disappearing. Just a couple years ago whole carts full of expensive stuff were being wheeled out of big box stores-- surveillance video was ending up on the news with pleas for help and everything. So, now the checkouts are a little slower. It sucks especially because it's Vermont, but the policies are no more extreme than NY/NH/MA/CT etc.

The biggest difference is at Costco you agree to let them look at your receipt. At Walmart my common reply after self checkout when asked “can I see your receipt?” is “no thank you” and to keep walking.

We have so few basic civil liberties left there is no fucking chance in hell I will agree to let some giant retail operation infringe of them.

You laugh but it starts with little things. The road to giving up your right to privacy is paved with the phrase, if you have nothing to hide why do you care. Little by little business chips away and one day you look up and realize you have given a private company access into your personal life.

Walmart Williston is getting very serious. They put men's underwear under lock and key - the glass cases with a lock like they do for electronics.

Once upon a time Walmart in Rutland had $1 Hot Wheels under lock and key.

They have so much damn money you'd think maybe they could go the other way. Give away underwear for anyone who is so down they feel the need to steal underwear.

I went into Price Chopper (or Market 32 maybe) a couple of months ago and realized I had forgotten my wallet in the car. I turned around with my cart to go get it and the cart’s wheels locked at the door! Employee told me that the carts have sensors and that know whether the cart has gone through the check out line.
