Rt 4 gets good plow during storms in windsor county, including hartford. I can't speak for the last leg of the trip into killington.

Yeah. The Woodstock Quechee exit drops you right onto Rt 4. It’s a straight shot across to Killington. It the major east west route through Vermont which means it’s more likely to be taken care of during a storm.

I know - not really an option unless super late when snow would already have started - hoping that overnight they do some cleaning and that’s is manageable Saturday - probably be in Vermont area midday-ish.

Any insight on the different options above and which roads tend to be better cleared?!

That's a bad strategy. Pretty much only 89 or the major freeways get consistent overnight plowing.

Your whole strategy is based on the fact that there will be overnight plowing. That only really happens on 89 or 91.

If your plan is based off plowing of other roads at night, it's a bad plan. Either go earlier, later, or you are just going on a prayer

Yeah we are trying to leave earlier now to beat some of it. And yea - plowing is only an assumption but was hoping it wasn’t far off with it being a northern state…

Damn! Trip planned for month and happy for some fresh POW, but just wondering about this drive up. But hearing you two interstates mentioned ! Thanks

Other states have "bare roads" plowing policies. Because that would cost taxpayers here a fortune, VT has a "safe roads at safe speeds" policy - essentially they'll do the best they can but you may not see pavement under the snow on some roads, so slow down and don't drive like a lunatic.

VT doesn’t plow the non arteries until snow stops. It sucks since you have to get to work or the grocery store and the roads will be a mess at 1pm.

It's not starting until around midnight. I'd leave around 9pm tonight or, well, personally, I won't drive in it tomorrow at all. I'm in the northern half of the state so have no insight into those secondary roads but concur that you're unlikely to see them plowed until the snow stops.

watch the wind with this one. This one is packing some strong gusts and has some good spin on it. Typically snow, heavy snow and wind = morning delays for ski resorts particularly Killington. Safe travels, and happy trails.

103 and 100 are rarely cleared as fast as 7. 7 is always a better bet.

Do you have snow tires? There’s some long steep climbs on Route 4 going up to Killington that might not go well if you don’t.

Brand new all weather tires - toyed with buying chains. We will be overnighting in rutland in a hotel and head to the mountain/resort Sunday. Hoping that is ok…if not other party has 4x4 and we can take turns doing the 20 minutes to the mountain from the hotel

I’ve found all-weathers and AWD to work fine in 99% of Vermont conditions, but there is definitely a limit. Chains are almost never a good idea in VT except for short distances when there is a layer of compacted snow/ice.

Avoid 100. Lacks cell service in many places. 7 is usually cleared faster and well traveled, less curves, and has spots that are wider and two lanes.

I'm not sure the best options but I would avoid 100 in a snow storm. I'm supposed to drive down 100 to Rutland Sunday and I won't unless everything is really clear. Not a road you want to be in in bad weather between the curves, the snow and lack of cell service.

Option A gives you way more places to bail if the roads are really bad.

87 also gets substantially more traffic, at least to exit 20 where you'll get off for 149, than the highways in VT so there should be better tracks even if the plows can't keep up with the snowfall.

I have done 149 to 4 in a snowstorm and it was doable but very slow going. Hardest part is getting over the top of Killington

It’s going to be a rough drive tomorrow morning to Killington at any approach without 4wd. You are going over/through some big passes no matter what to get to Rutland. Please consider waiting till later in the day to leave and be safe. Lots of us have to drive these roads for work:/
