Pretty sure he was a billionaire before Tesla.

His PayPal sale to eBay gave him enough money to make his other ventures household names.

So again, he made a product that was wanted (PayPal) and got rich.

Well, he created x.com, the online bank which merged with the software company to create PayPal to get sold to eBay. So, he was 1/2 of PayPal.

So yeah, pretty sure he was a big part of PayPal.
