Police are allowed to be hired for private events and still exercise the massive police powers that we, the public (not the private) give to police.
Police officers should only have their police powers when working for a public governmental body. Period. Off duty? No police powers. Doing part time security work for a private business? No police powers.

OP crossposts many news stories across a number of VT and New England subs. Most of the time it's just a link to the story, with the implication that redditors in that sub should take it and run with some kind of discussion. OP seems like more of a shit-stirrer. Not that I'm any better with my comments, but I don't crosspost stuff in the hopes of creating controversy or getting votes. And I don't re-post stuff that's already been posted 2 or 3 other times and has already been discussed. Please see my comment linked below about the types of people in VT. I think you'll notice where OP fits.
You're not going to be crossposting in rural regional subreddits if your goal is imaginary internet points. You're not going to be crossposting from a political-focused subreddit unless you're interested in discussing politics, which I guess could be fairly called shit-stirring.
Last VT Politics subreddit I knew, r/vermontpolitics, was run by powermods just making a run on state + politics subreddits.

I am torn because i both agree and disagree with your points. I have engaged with this person on other platforms and without any doubt they absolutely have a political bias and agenda. I disagree with saying this stuff has no place here though. I have had more than a few points brought to my attention in .. charged conversations from posts like this far more often than i have in the ones that occur in the field and stream/***spam posts,lol.
Granted the opposing POV's i have encountered did F-all to change my mind but they did show me where many of my fellow Vermonters stand on issues. Again you all would never have revealed that in the kind of posts that you seem to want to cultivate here and i think that would be a dis-service to public discourse.
I totally agree with the OP. When an off duty officer is working a private event, and they're in a uniform that says, for instance, city of Burlington Police, that gives the impression that they're working for the city of Burlington in an official capacity, when in fact they are not. This, should not be allowed.
How about when hired for public events they are not allowed to wear a police uniform or have qualified immunity (tbh they shouldn’t have that in the first place)
It's crazy they can do this. I work for the state and our conflict of interest rules would never allow anything close to that.
I work for a private IT company and I think they too would be pretty pissed if I moonlighted under their name
I’m for qualified immunity for cops as long as the politicians enjoy qualified immunity.
Take away the qualified immunity from politicians and then we can talk about the cops, especially when off duty.

I absolutely do want them accountable, but I didn’t think they had full qualified immunity like the cops do.
When they are acting in legislative capacity they have immunity from their decisions. I don’t believe they need or deserve that protection from the people they serve.
I’d still allow immunity for decisions made by volunteer boards or officials elected at the town level as they are generally not compensated.
I don't get why you're being downvoted. Politicians should be held accountable for their tax-funded actions in their official capacity. If any lawmaker proposed a bill which was made law, and then found to be unconstitutional, they should be subject to legal penalty for violating the rights of the people they are charged with governing. Why is that a controversial though for some? We encourage further violations of rights by not having such rules in place.
I don't think it's qualified immunity, though, for policy makers it is usually referred to as legislative immunity.

I hate the news articles that are like 'drunk off duty police officer assaults guy on sidewalk' like if you're not in uniform (obviously excepting undercovers) you should be a civilian and treated as such
IMO you should held to a higher standard at all times, not treated as an average citizen
Somehow i missed this conversation the first time around but i have to say that i agree with OP. The problem is bigger than this one contract. LEO occupy a certain place of privilege in society out of necessity. Dont get me wrong, i think the justice system itself has became all but criminal and 2 tiered at least. We have too many laws and too many more that are selectively enforced.
Which brings me back to my point; LEO should be barred from working any type of second job like security that puts them in potential conflict with the rest of us. Do they lose the legal protections they have as LEO when they are on the clock for private entities? If not then they would be a ready made mercenary force ( harsh and over the top wording i know,but i can see some events that could go sideways easily ) that could act with impunity given their protected status. Both seem like Very bad ideas to me.
Just ban them from working these jobs and make the promoters hire private security that are not LE. They have chosen to be LEO, they can always quit and become private sector security guards but it has to be a choice one way or the other imo.

I understand you made a sub to discuss topics that interest you but you post duplicates or cross post things here which have been discussed here already and you are often a few days later, rehashing discussions that have already happened.
While not a bad thing in and of itself it seems like rather then engage, you a looking to drive a conversation or narrative rather then discuss an event. It seems topics and conversations like that with a blatantly political slant a better suited for the sub you created and less interesting here in a general context.
With that said, I agree that off duty leo need more controls on off duty hours.
