How can you do multiple great movies, do one failure and close up shop? That's not healthy.

Ishtar was really really bad. And expensive

Wow I've heard of this Ishtar but that must have been BAD

From what I gather, Coca-Cola was already starting to think a movie studio investment was more volatile than anticipated then WHAM this flop movie sends them the bill.

Hoffman was reflecting on it, or maybe asked about it in an interview. His response was something like “into everybody’s life an Ishtar must fall”. Not sure why that stuck with me but I chuckle about it whenever it surfaces.

It's a great way of saying we all must have our failures.

The film industry wasn't worth it, in the CEOs eyes.

I was a manager of a movie theater showing Ishtar. It was the only movie I screened where patrons demanded their money back. I gave it to them.
