Huh so all these western zoo workers are in for a rude awakening if they try to handle a Nile croc

I wonder what would make the crocodiles in that area so docile. Something in the water, perhaps?

they're a different species (west african crocodile) that's much less aggressive than the more well known nile crocodile

They're West African Crocodiles, not Nile Crocodiles. A smaller and much more docile species.

Not that they aren't dangerous, they are known to attack and have killed people from time to time, but there's a long history of humans handling them - sometimes literally - in ways that would be considered suicidal if attempted with Nile crocs. Even going as far back as Pharaonic Egypt people knew there was a difference between the two and knew which one they'd rather get close to.

Knock on door of home in Burkina Faso

Woman opens the door a crocodile sits there as the woman turns she shouts

"Englebert your friend Arnold wants to know if you want to go out to play today?"

Englebert"No Mommy, Arnold's mean he bit my leg off!"

Woman "Hush child he didn't mean it and besides you've still got one leg left and you've gotten so good at hopping. He says he'll cry if you don't go out to play."
