My Aunt actually wrote a book about them and there was even a documentary where the descendant of a former slave (and friends with my aunt) met my grandmother whose family owned her ancestors. Turns out the lady she was friends with for years was connected to her.

Knowing her it was probably in protest of the Vietnam war and also due to the overwhelming racism in the South at the time. She was heavily involved in the civil rights movement. What a lady!

It's the Long S. Spanish started exclusively using the short s around 1760, then it spread to France, then to English around 1890. Dropping it apparently saved on printing costs, so the change was rather rapid.
