Rather than "attempted to replicate their success" the wiki says they were actually making fun of the success of Superman:

"In the first issue, Siegel and Shuster mocked what they saw as the rush of Superman clones in a story called "Funman, Comicman and Laffman"."

And after Funnyman failed, Shuster would go on to draw "Nights of Horror" under a pseudonym. The series would feature scenes of BDSM and bondage, which would eventually lead to the state of New York banning the comic. We didn't know it was Shuster until 50 years after its release.

Lol, editing now. At least I avoided using the brand name instead of the item, ya know?

“Funnyman” sounded really dumb until I started to think about the advanced calculations required to come up with Superman.

"How about a human, but faster and stronger?"

"BRILLIANT!"

Even worse was when they started adding powers. Like, this one time Superman flew really fast, around the planet, counterclockwise (of course) to go back in time. I mean it's one of my earliest memories: "are you fucking kidding me?"

He once sneezed a universe into existence. Considering when he started he couldn't fly, but "leap over buildings in a single bound", that's quite the power up

Siegel and Shuster had nothing to do with the Joker. The Joker was based on The Man Who Laughs and was conceived by Bill Finger and Jerry Robinson.

The Joker first appeared in 1940. Funnyman came out in 1948

Funnyman bringing out the classics on that cover, I see.

Cool. Seems like the same schtick as Jack In The Box from Astro City.

>In the first issue, Siegel and Shuster mocked what they saw as the rush of Superman clones in a story called "Funman, Comicman and Laffman".[4] In the story, TV comedian Larry Davis dresses up in a costume to catch a fake criminal for a publicity stunt, but he catches a real criminal instead, and decides to become a superhero.

So it's orign mirrors the plot of the first issue a bit.

I like the idea, this character has potential. But it's probably difficult to write good stories consistently.

I'd watch if Larry David played Larry Davis.

More like "attempted to replicate the success of The Joker in the Batman franchise."
