There was one in a town I lived in once, and you basically drove INTO the store. It was like a car wash, but you drove in, they walked up to your window, you asked for what you want, and they brought it all to your car and put in in the back seat or trunk.

Aww shit. Big Daddy's in Newport, KY. I remember getting liquor there on the way to the nearby punk club in the 80s.

As they should be.

In no state is it illegal to have liquor in your car, so there’s no reason not to have convenience.

Probably have drive through daiquiri shops as well there… but they have to put a piece of masking tape on the lid to “make it legal”… wink wink.

OrionR t1_j119pwj wrote

In some states it is illegal to have liquor in a compartment accessible to the driver while in motion, so the drive thru format would have to involve loading the trunk instead of handing the purchase through a rolled down window. That practically limits the order fulfillment method to curbside pickup.

Edit: Seems I had bad info on the state I had in mind but the myth came from somewhere. Anyone know what state might have a law about location of SEALED containers in a motor vehicle?

Had a friend from Ohio, and one of his friends from back home came to visit once. He was astounded that it was possible to stop down at the corner gas station at 6AM on a Sunday and buy liquor.

I was specifically thinking of North Carolina when I made my post, but looking around the internet the no closed alcohol containers in the passenger compartment rule may only apply to commercial vehicles. It's unclear to me now since I can't easily find the law itself. Everything I saw while skimming seems to be secondhand info, and some of my search results say that it is specifically legal rather than illegal in a commercial vehicle, contradicting the others.

Apparently we need a lawyer to be certain. The only thing I can be sure of now is that I was told to keep it in the trunk even if closed so that a cop couldn't use it as an excuse. I thought it was a misdemeanor.

piquedinhighschool t1_j11ecte wrote

I’ve never heard of your supposed rule for passenger cars. I feel like that would need to be a pretty prominent message because people buy alcohol all the time and put it in the seat next to them.

Haha, I've had the Grand Tour of Ohio during my lifetime so I know exactly what you're talking about. I grew up in the Cincinnati area, went to college at OSU, and live in NEO now.

These drive-thru convenience stores are all over the place. The only thing that sucks about NEO is the nearest Skyline is down in Mayfield...

I lived in a tiny town for a while. One of the two bars in the entire town had a drive up window where you could buy plastic cups of soda and ice and airline size bottles of booze.

I think a twelve ounce soda and a shot of Soco was like 3 or 4 bucks. Weekends were really wild in that area. It's also a college town.

I've got a friend that fell off the roof of a bank, but nobody saw it happen so his friends found him, picked him up and took him back to the bar.

I guess eventually someone was like, "Jeff, why are you bleeding from your ears?"

OrionR t1_j11gtuc wrote

It's not "my" rule. I never asked for it.

Found the actual law: https://www.ncleg.net/EnactedLegislation/Statutes/HTML/BySection/Chapter_20/GS_20-138.7.html

It looks like what I heard before was just incorrect, the law explicitly allows sealed containers in the passenger compartment. Also, the commercial vehicle exception is to allow open containers.

Funny enough, if you ask Bing a rather pointed question about whether or not a SEALED container is illegal in the passenger compartment in North Carolina, it says that it is... misinterpreting the available sources like what appears to be many other parties before it.

Regardless, I do think it's wise advice to put it in the trunk whenever practical like any object that could become a projectile in an accident.

Brew Through? I've used them in Myrtle Beach, SC and (I think) Pensacola, FL).

Some have funny rules. Like, if there is a lid on it, it's not an "open" container. Or better, they put the straw in, but tear 90% of the paper off.

Most people just get a case or 2 of beer, and pop the trunk on the way to beach week.

The most fun part is thinking of people spending years of their lives inhaling exhaust fumes. Thank God there are fewer diesels...

A lot of rural bars in Tennessee still have these. They would start out as "package stores" where you could drive up to the window to get six-packs then as time went on some of them would add-on a space for a bar and pool tables or music stages.

I moved to the midwest from the deep south, this and liquor in grocery stores/gas stations were like my biggest culture shocks.

I remember when i was a kid the grocery store by my house started selling beer and wine and there were organized protests bc of it, if a drive thru liquor store popped up i know many people who would just straight up move. Meanwhile i come here and im pretty sure riots would be started if a grocery store said theyd stop selling everclear

Honestly why not. Most any country that allows personal liquor purchases will let you place it in your vehicle. Why not cut down the middle work and have someone else put it in your car as long as your sober as the driver. Any sane person knows to wait until your home. And any sane business owner knows to not serve someone even slightly impaired.

From 1995 until 1998, I was in the US Army and assigned to Fort Knox, Kentucky. I remember driving on the Dixie Highway to Louisville, Kentucky and seeing drive through liquor store on the near county lines. Some Kentucky counties are dry- alcohol is illegal to sell. These types of county line liquor stores are nicknamed first chance / last change stores, because you were either departing or about to enter a dry county.

Yes, that’s a little different. During Covid you could order any drink (and maybe still can, I think they never changed that) to go and it was fine as long as it had a lid and like a piece of tape over the lid.

That was definitely a life saver for the bars. Culturally it is very different here. We were the last state to raise the drinking age. No politician will win if they say they will tighten up the “drive thru daiquiri” loophole. Cops know virtually every person who gets a daiquiri is putting the straw in and sipping as they pull out of the lot. And this is not just New Orleans. It is nearly every county (we call them “parishes”) in the lower part of the state. MADD tried to shut them down in the 90’s and a satirical group called DAMM cranked up (drinks against mad mothers) it is just one of those nutso things down here. Maybe the hurricanes made us crazy. When I walk the dogs in the evening, it is common to do so with a “walking cocktail”. Sipping a Sazerac while taking the evening stroll is nearly expected.
