As a model nerd, I really love this.

As a human that realizes $24 million could do a lot for underprivileged Canadians, it sort of makes me sick.

Why do people on reddit always act like spending money deletes it? I bet he pays a lot of people to build that.

Cuz most people on Reddit are young and stupid. And they’re not even considering the revenue it will generate when people pay to come see it or where ever it ends up will bring people to that location and generate all kinds of good things.

I don't think it's just age. I hear plenty of old people with the same argument. Usually something like "Why spend all that money on space?" as if we're literally sending cash up there.

People just don't seem to get how economies work.

Arnlaugur1 t1_j1y69x1 wrote

I mean economically we want rich people to spend their wealth and not just sit on it, that 24m doesn't just disappear from the economy it goes towards businesses that are creating these models. Much rather see rich people blow their money on shit like this than yachts or stuff only they can enjoy and has no real artistic value. Although ideally yeah that money could be way better spent

The irony of your comment is worth noting. Scale. A model of scale and a net worth of scale. The 45mm he’s using to create this protect is only 2.25% of his total net worth. While the 45mm is a staggering sum, an estimate of his worth at $2bb is low and the amount committed to this project by percentage of his net worth is low. For example ~$30 on coffee per week yields a 2% allocation per year on a 75k salary. So maybe it’s just coffee money to him.

rayinreverse t1_j1xlnaf wrote

That’s what’s fucked up. It’s just coffee money to him. And life changing for A LOT of people.

I get how it looks at first blush. Take a moment.

It is Art for Art’s sake. The cool thing is that he himself is not creating it. The art supplies and craftsmen (people) are actually fueling creation, the arts, and paychecks for a lot of talented people. These people would otherwise not have this cool thing to be part of - and create.

He could be like another billionaire and just keep his money tied up in stocks. That is “Money for Money’s sake” - and really doesn’t enrich or employ anyone.

It doesn’t have to be soup kitchens to be philanthropic, really. If I could leave a unique creation that could have echos through time, I would do it.

Frank Lloyd Wright was based in two different locations in the US. The schools of thought… The talented, trained teams that worked and learned from him still carry traits from his work even generations later- frequently in the same families.

Echoes into the future.

Hard agree. I love art and think generous expenditures by the rich should be encouraged and celebrated when warranted. The only dig I can offer is that building public infrastructure may be a better use of the money. As in, personally I'd take more satisfaction in knowing millions of people in Asia are safe from floods than I would to visit Li'oh Inglunn.

And our coffee money could also change a lot of peoples lives. Not the same scale but the same point.

Good point. I still buy myself coffee. I’m not better.

MrMissus t1_j1y21e1 wrote

That's insane. 24 million dollars is not 'relatively' the same amount as 3 dollars. You're not 'relatively' as bad as him.

NotAReal_Doctor t1_j1xosma wrote

Naw, you’re better for even making the mention here. He’s a fuck and should at least spend our coffee money on shit that matters.

phdoofus t1_j1xzuy6 wrote

$1M would be 'somewhat life changing' to about 45 people because it would allow them to have retirement savings.

It's true, two bongo-billions is much more than 4 mega-millions.

So all art should be dropped until everyone is no longer poor?

I’m guessing the arts in Canada across the country amount to far more than $24 million. Some films and tv shows cost far more.

fuck that noise. They didn’t make that money in a vacuum, no matter what bootstraps bullshit they espouse. They had the benefit of living in a society, with all the infrastructure, support, and benefits that entails. They have an obligation to give back to that society.

giantpotato t1_j1xdy9n wrote

Where do you think the money goes? It's giving jobs to architects, electricians, sculptors, painters & other staff. Is that not giving back to society?

All money that is spent is put back into the economy in order to benefit society.

You have to understand that not everyone is a millennial reddit socialist like you. In the real world, people with this view are laughed at. But enjoy your safe space

Do you think that Reddit's user base is an accurate representation of American society? Millennials and socialists are overrepresented on this site. If this site were a true representation of the real world, the user base would be 37% moderate, 36% conservative, and 25% liberal.. The fact that you're ignorant of this truth is scary

Well, you could go work for the guy and donate a portion of your income... or donate more of what you have now (money or time).

I see eccentric rich people being better than investment-rich rich people. They fund a lot of arts and science.
